Margaret Tait Retirement

16th January 2020

After 25 years of tireless work and dedication, our wonderful, irreplaceable CEO Margaret Tait is taking early retirement on 16th January. She has steered the company through good and sometimes challenging times and has always kept the welfare and wellbeing of our service users, trainees and volunteers first and foremost in her mind.

During her tenure she has been responsible for the growth of our In-work Horticultural Services allowing service users the opportunity to work and be part of a team either growing and tending plants in the greenhouses or as part of our landscaping team. She was the driving force behind In-work's move to the Broomhill Hub in 2017 managing to procure £2.2m in funding for the highly successful project which as well as housing our own In-work team and the Garden Cafe also hosts the community Hub.

We will miss her very much and will be sad to see her go but we wish her all the best in this next stage of her life and hope she enjoys spending time with her family and friends, doing the things that she hasn't had time for before. She deserves all the best things in her retirement years to come!

Climate Challenge Fund Award for IAMH

23rd April 2019

We are delighted to announce that Inverclyde Association for Mental Health have been awarded a grant made available through the Scottish Government’s Climate Challenge Fund (CCF) totalling £185,316 over 2 years.

The CCF is a Scottish Government grant programme, managed and administered by Keep Scotland Beautiful. The CCF provides funding and support for community groups to help tackle climate change by running projects that reduce local carbon emissions.

The project will involve the community in an exciting programme to encourage food growing and the use of the seasonal food produced in free cookery classes snf in our own Garden Cafe. The project also aims to provide information and support to the Broomhill community to reduce their food waste, increase composting and make low carbon food choices to help reduce their carbon footprint.

This will allow us to purchase a polytunnel and a large greenhouse to compliment the raised beds planned for the land owned by IAMH adjacent to our Hub. In addition, the funding will enable employment of a project worker who would support community involvement in growing activities on site and in practical workshops.

We will post news of dates for the beginning of the project as soon as we have them and look forward to working with the local aspiring gardeners!

Building 2 will house the horticultural services and in time, Phase 2 will see the project expand with the addition of outdoor space for planting and green houses on the adjacent Blaes pitch site.

Margaret Tait, CEO of Inverclyde Association of Mental Health, said: “All of this would not have been possible without the vision and financial investment from The Big Lottery, Inverclyde Council, Scottish Government and our own organisation Inverclyde Association for Mental Health. I would like to take this opportunity to thank them for their support, commitment and perseverance in getting us to this stage and look forward to this time next year when we will have a facility that we can all be proud of.”

National Regeneration Funding for Broomhill Horticultural Training and Community Facility

1 December 2014

IAMH was one of two Inverclyde projects to have been successful in securing national regeneration funds totaling over £1m. The new Horticultural Training and Community Facility in Broomhill is a community initiative that has been supported and facilitated by Inverclyde Council and has received indicative award of £397,308 from Scottish Regeneration Funding.  Riverside Inverclyde’s project to deliver an enterprise workspace at the Custom House building is set to receive £649,332.

The Regeneration Capital Grant Fund, developed in partnership with COSLA and local authorities has an annual budget of £25m to provide financial support to projects that will help to deliver large-scale improvements to deprived areas. It focuses on projects that engage and involve local communities and those that can demonstrate the ability to deliver sustainable regeneration outcomes.

The building will comprise of a training space, meeting space, hall area, cafe and office space. It will also house Inverclyde Association for Mental Health to support them in delivering an extended range of employment training opportunities for people with mental health issues.

The centre will be acting as a community based anchor facility that will complement the housing and environmental regeneration of Broomhill. The project will also support the development of In Work Horticultural Service as a major social enterprise in the area.

Inverclyde’s Environment and Regeneration Convener, Councillor Michael McCormick, said: “This is welcome news that two Inverclyde regeneration projects will receive funding of over £1m. New Mearns Steet, Broomhill Proposal

Monday, 11 August 2014

Inverclyde Association for Mental Health (IAMH) have applied for permission to build a horticultural training and community centre to be built on land stretching from Mearns Street to Nile Street taking in the site of the disused Mearns Centre -- which would be demolished -- and the blaes gravel pitch between Nile Street, Dempster Street and Trafalgar Street.

The project involves the development of a new horticulture training and community facility that comprises of a range of training space; meeting space; hall area; cafe; and office space.  It will also include the development of a new demonstration garden within a courtyard environment and growing area.

The site also incorporates a disused, overgrown aqueduct, formerly part of the Eastern Line of Falls, which is currently redirected further south at Drumfrochar Road. The plan is for this section to be re-opened to allow natural movement of water through the site.

The project is conceived as a series of streets -- existing and new -- which divide the site into three distinctive areas: The Walled Garden, The ‘Green Route’ with ornamental gardens and IAMH growing gardens and demonstration areas.

There would be a garden area on the roof of the building with paths and places to sit offering views of the gardens below and the wider landscape.  Following consultation, the proposal emerged that there would be value in merging the horticultural training centre and new community facility as a single project.

The application is pending consideration by Inverclyde Council planning department. For further information, pleas follow this link to see the full application at Inverclyde Planning Department
